Building Success in Real Estate
About Barry Bazel

Barry Bazel was born March 13, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York. In his earlier
years, Barry and his family resided in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, where he attended P. S. 139, and Walt Whitman Junior High School.
In late 1954, Barry’s father, Irving Bazel, had the opportunity to move to South Florida to continue his life-long career in the building supply field. Irving opened up a small hardware store in Ft. Lauderdale. The business continued to grow and expand, as South Florida grew. Barry, as a young boy worked in the store on weekends, holidays, and summer vacations .
After graduating from Hollywood’s South Broward High School in 1960, Barry was accepted at the University of Miami. There he pursued a career in Finance. In 1964, Barry graduated from the University of Miami, and continued his education at the University of Miami School of Law.
Barry graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1967. After
passing the Florida Bar, he worked for a large Nationwide Computerized Credit
Bureau in New York City. He left that position and returned to South Florida
to work for Groves Lumber Company, the hardware store started by Barry’s
father. This building material supply company has now become a leading
supplier to homeowners and builders in Western Broward County.
In 1977, Barry purchased land across from the Broward Mall in Ft.
Lauderdale, and in late 1978 he completed what is now known as the Shoppes of
Jacaranda, a fifteen (15) store Mini-Mall.
In October 1981, Barry signed a contract for the purchase of a
20,000 square foot vacant building in downtown Bar Harbor, Maine. This
building, built in 1903, was completely restored and developed into a select
group of shops and boutiques.
In 1987, Barry completed the Mayfair Village Shoppes in
Indialactic, Florida; acquired the Turf Motel in San Diego and restored a
building known as Harbor Place in downtown Kirkland, Washington. The Harbor
Place Project was completed in 1987 and in November 1988, Barry purchased an
old established building supply company in Victoria, British Columbia.
Upon moving to Canada, Barry also looked into other opportunities
and August 1989 Barry set up a distribution company for Famous Amos Cookies.
These cookies along with other food products imported from the U.S. are
distributed by a company known as Famous Enterprises Ltd. In 1991, Barry set
up a warehouse for this company in Richmond, British Columbia, and
distributed those products throughout Canada.
BKB Properties purchased the North Beach Inn, a 56 room motel on
Corpus Christi beach and after extensive renovations converted this property
to the Days Inn, Corpus Christi Beach. This conversion was completed in
October 1992, and for the first twelve months of operation this hotel did
over $10,000 per room of hotel revenue.
In January 1995, BKB Properties, of which Barry is President, sold the Corpus
Christi Days Inn for $1.5 million dollars. This sale was part of a 1031
Tax-exchange and resulted in Corpus Inn Corporation acquiring The Petroleum
Building in Wichita Falls, Texas. The building consists of both office space
and a hotel totaling over 140,000 sq. ft. This mixed-use project was sold in
January 1997.
In 1995 BKB Properties also purchased the St. Louis Park Theater Building in
the Minneapolis area. Renovation in this retail office complex began in late
1996, and has been completed. This project has both retail and office space
on two levels and the retail portion is fully leased at present.
BKB PROPERTIES, which already owns the ST LOUIS PARK THEATRE BUILDING
in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1998 purchased the Chocktaw Village Shopping Center
in Waveland, Mississippi as well as the Palm Plaza Shopping Center in
Lucedale, Mississippi. The Chocktaw property was renovated in 1998. After
extensive leasing efforts, both of these properties have been turned around
and are starting to contribute to the overall profitability of BKB PROPERTIES.
The Harbor Place Mall project which Barry started on the late 80’s is now
100% leased and that site though on a ground lease, is very profitable and is
in the heart of one of the most thriving areas in the Northwest, located
directly on lake Washington.
1999 was a very tough and sad year for Barry. His wife of 20 years – Sharon Bazel,
passed away in April after putting up a tough fight with a very rare women’s
cancer. It made Barry realize how precious and short life can be as this girl
was in perfect health and would be the least likely person to have to go
through this awful illness. When Sharon became ill, Barry moved with his
wife to the San Diego area to try some recommended alternative treatments in
Mexico.
In 1999 Barry, through his Canadian Company Famous Enterprises Ltd., acquired
the Fairview Shopping and Office Complex in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This
property has a mixed blend of national retail tenants including Subway,
Sobeys, the Bank of Montreal, and numerous office tenants. This property was
more than 50% vacant when acquired and has since been substantially renovated
and is now 100% leased.
In 2006 BKB Properties sold the St. Louis Park Theatre building and in early 2007
acquired The Grand Suites Hotel near Galveston Texas. This property is currently
undergoing a major renovation and will shortly become a Travelodge Inn & Suites
with over 130 rooms and suites as well as many meeting rooms to accommodate
small or large groups. In addition the property has a large pool & whirlpool area
as well as a Sports Bar. When completed in mid 2007 this property should be
considered a First Class Lodging facility and greatly compliment the
Texas city/La Marque area. BKB Properties is investing over 1.5 million dollars
in improvements to this property.
IN PERSPECTIVE
BKB Properties is currently looking into new projects in Mississippi,
Minnesota, Texas, New Jersey, and Eastern Canada. They will also be looking for
locations in the Mississippi Gulfcoast, as well as Seattle, Halifax, and Corpus
Christi. They offer a great potential for growth in the coming years.
